How to check your writing (5 common types of mistake)

The vast majority of the grammar errors I see in my students' work fall into these five categories. When you've finished writing, try putting on your 'tense' hat first and read through your work to check for this type of mistake. When you've done this, 'change hats' and read it again for subject-verb agreement  errors. You'll have to re-read your work five times, but you might be surprised how much you learn to notice!

Some people recommend reading the last sentence first, then the second-to-last sentence, and so on, working back up to the beginning - it's supposed to let you focus more on the sentence grammar than the content, but you'll have to try it for yourself...

1. Tense errors
For example:
Some people think there was a much wider choice of items available on the internet
So how about you? Do anything interesting happen on your holiday?
How are you recently?

2. Subject-verb agreement errors
For example:
Some people says that shopping is a sociable activity.
Everyone are looking forward to the Tet holiday.
You can buy whatever you want online, which mean you never have to leave the house.
·
·         3.Word form errors
For example:
When I saw all the old buildings had been knocked down, I was shock.
Go to the shop is a favourite activity of lots of teenager.
I think it will takes a few hours.

·         4. Leaving out necessary verbs, or adding unnecessary verbs
·          For example:
Our world going to develop quickly.
Many items more expensive in the shops than they are online.
was spent the whole day revising for my mock exam.

5.Comma splices (joining two or more main clauses together with only a comma)
For example:
We decided to take a walk around the city, we wanted to see some of the sights and try some of the local food.
Firstly a lot of shopping websites have appeared, people can get what they want with just a few clicks of a mouse.
We didn't want to leave the resort, we had had such a good holiday.
